 Japan Rail Pass made easy - step by step help page to guide you through your trip. This is the only type of international travel ticket where you receive it upon arriving at your destination.

 

 Since you must purchase an Exchange Order first, there are very important steps to take before you actually receive your ticket. Read every step below carefully, follow the inks and it will be very easy for you.

 

  Step 1 - You must purchase an Exchange Order first before you travel! Click below to     purchase your Exchange Order:

 Step 2 - When you arrive, the immigration officials will stamp your passport to show a 

 Temporary Visa.

 

 

 Step 3 - Take your stamped passport and Exchange Order to a JR station that has an 

 exchange office.  When you make the exchange you will be asked to fill in a simple application form (You can download it here to save time).  To summarize - you must show:


 Once these have been submitted, you then receive your ticket!

 

 No actual ticket can be issued anywhere else.

 

 

Who can use It...

 This is specifically designed for tourists and sight-seers. In order to use it, your entry status must be a “temporary visitor”. This allows you up to 90 days for “sight-seeing”.  Click here for more on eligibility.

 

Where can you use it...

  •  All JR Group Railways-Shinkansen"bullet trains" (except any reserved or non-reserved seat on "NOZOMI" trains), limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains.

 

  • Buses: Local lines of JR bus companies (JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus, JR Kyushu Bus) and some of JR highway bus services. Sapporo-Otaru; Morioka-Hirosaki; Tokyo-Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka,Tsukuba Center; Nagoya-Kyoto, Osaka; Osaka-Tsuyama, Kasai Flower Center.

 

  •  Ferry: Only the JR Miyajima ferry is covered. The JR Hakata-Pusan (Korea) ferry is not covered.

Important Notes:

 Not valid for any seats, reserved or non-reserved, on "NOZOMI" trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo 

 Shinkansen lines. (You must take “HIKARI” or “KODAMA” trains.) If you use a "NOZOMI," you must pay the

 basic fare and the limited express charge, and for a Green Car the Green Car surcharge. Note also that

 passengers using JR trains on non-JR lines must pay additional fares and charges for sections traveled on

 such lines.


 So basically, you get unlimited travel across the country on all - bus, ferry, etc. except where it is

 specifically excluded!
