1. When you travel by train throughout Europe, keep your passport available. Your Eurail Pass ticket is connected to
your name and passport number and some checks require that you show both your Eurail ticket and your passport.
2. Do your homework carefully when planning your itinerary. If you have to do part of your journey on private European
train lines rather than nationalized ones, such as in Switzerland, you will have to pay a surcharge. Good route
planning can keep these extra travel costs to a minimum.
3. Birthdays can make a difference to the cost of your Eurail Pass. Those under the age of 26 qualify for a Youth
Eurail Pass saving around 23% on first class tickets and even more if you opt for 2nd class travel. It does not
always pay to wait!
4. Stretch that one month Eurail Pass by traveling in a month which has 31 days such as May, July, August and October
as it costs the same as for February (28 days!).
5. Get up to 29 hours use from a single travel day. Travel days are usually counted from midnight to midnight, but if
you board an overnight train or ferry after 7pm your travel day lasts until midnight of the following day.
6. Another benefit of using Eurail tickets on overnight trips is that it saves on a night’s accommodation in a hotel or
hostel.
7. Checkout the extras. Eurail Pass holders also qualify for discounts with other travel companies. P&O ferries offer a
30% reduction on crossings between Dover and Calais while SeaFrance and Irish ferries offer 50% reductions. Checkout
the small print for the places you intend to travel and make sure you get the most value from your Eurail card.
8. Buying a Eurail Saver Pass for 2-5 travelers works out cheaper than individual tickets. You must travel together but
for couples and families it is ideal. The more names there are on the Pass, the less per head the ticket works out.
9. Eurail Passes are at a fixed price and individual vendors can only offer marginal discounts. If you see a discounted
Eurail Pass that seems too good to be true – it probably is. Buy only from a reputable online Eurail Pass vendor.
10. Purchasing your European Rail Pass ahead of time can save money as avoids any price rises.
11. Although you may want to keep your travel plans flexible, it pays to have a definite planned itinerary. This avoids
you buying a pass to countries which you do not need, or buying a limited Eurail Regional Pass and then having to
supplement it for countries you had not planned to visit. If you don’t need unlimited travel to all 22 countries,
don’t pay out for a Eurail Global Pass.
12. Finally, think outside the box. If you are just traveling a short local train journey on one day, pay cash for the
ticket and save your available Eurail travel days for longer and more cost-effective journeys.
